Living Pavilion is an efficient measure to enhance the microclimate while simultaneously promoting biodiversity and teaching the pupils sustainability. The Pavilion will support a green roof and a green façade. Green roofs and green facades will bind CO2 as well as fine dust to reduce outdoor air temperature, and thus, to mitigate the urban heat island effect.
The pavilion provides a shaded area and, consequently, serves as a comfortable and visually pleasing recreational space for waiting parents, teachers, and pupils. The vegetation layer will reduce rainwater runoff and store water in combination with the water retention layer.
Cool roofs are either painted with white, highly reflective paint or coated with highly reflective materials, like China mosaic tiles or membranes. This way, solar radiation is reflected rather than absorbed by the building mass, decreasing temperatures both on the roof and in the building.
Maintaining low temperatures helps generate a comfortable study environment in the future, even with increasing temperatures due to climate change. Furthermore, the need for air conditioning and fan operation is decreased with the help of a cool roof, which leads to lower energy consumption.
Cool roofs can also enhance the power generation of PV systems since the reflected solar radiation hits the system's surface in addition to the already available radiation.
The Elamakkara School garden is part of green infrastructure project at the school. The garden not only adds to the benefits of green infrastructure but also helps in creating a sense of connection between the children the nature. It is a great way for students to learn the importance of taking care of a living organism. At the Starting point, the students are educated about taking care of the plants and gardening techniques. They shall learn to appreciate and value the importance of taking care of our ecosystem and the crucial role of keeping the delicate balances in our ecosystem.
